FED:Gay marriage will cost Labor seats: claim

SYDNEY, Aug 11 AAP - Labor will lose federal seats in Queensland and western Sydney
if it backs gay marriage, a member of the party's powerful national executive says.

Joe de Bruyn says lower house MPs from the sunshine state are particularly nervous
as polls show the ALP facing electoral oblivion.

"There are people who believe that this issue could lose them the next election," Mr
de Bruyn, the national secretary of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association,
said.

"Members of the House of Representatives have made it clear to me the issue of gay
marriage is going to cost us in Queensland.

"Many seats in Queensland are not safe seats."

Mr de Bruyn said a federal MP from Queensland had recently given him a text message
saying opinion in his electorate against gay marriage ran at "four to one".

He added that Labor also risked losing marginal seats in western Sydney and the NSW
Central Coast if it endorsed gay marriage at its national conference in December.

Every Labor state branch, except NSW, has endorsed gay marriage.

But Mr de Bruyn said adopting the same policy position as the Australian Greens would
play into the hands of Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.

"There are many people, including the Coalition, who criticise Labor because they say
the Greens call the shots, the Greens set the policy agenda," he said.

Mr de Bruyn hails from a right-wing sub-group on Labor's 21-member national executive.

He does not believe that Finance Minister Penny Wong's decision to have a baby with
her lesbian partner Sophie Allouache would affect voters' opinion.

"In today's society, this is not the first time this has happened," he said.

The union boss argued that Labor's only hope of winning the next election was to pick
up seats in Queensland and NSW, because it would struggle to win any more seats in the
other states.

The New South Wales opposition says a gaffe by Premier MORRIS IEMMA .. in which he
called on the Commonwealth to reduce interest rates .. shows he's inexperienced and lacking
economic credibility.

While commenting on new housing affordability research .. Mr IEMMA said the Commonwealth
could help out young homebuyers by dropping rates.

Opposition leader PETER DEBNAM says the gaffe about rates .. which are set by the Reserve

NSW:O'Farrell to help with power hike pain

New South Wales Premier BARRY O'FARRELL says he has a three-point plan to tackle rising
power prices .. and he feels enormous sympathy for people who will struggle to pay the
next round of hikes of some 18 per cent.

The price hikes mean between 230 and 320 dollars extra a year for most consumers.

Officials have partly blamed state-run network costs and the federal government's Renewable
Energy Target.

Mr O'FARRELL says he already raised the issue of compensation for the federal government's
RET program with Prime Minister JULIA GILLARD yesterday .. and rebates of up to 250 promised
during the election campaign .. will be paid to some.

And .. a capital expenditure review for the state-owned power network will also be
undertaken to determine if there was any gold-plated spending.

Vic: Superporn search as $200,000 offered in double murder

By Steve Lillebuen

MELBOURNE, April 9 AAP - A Thai woman known as "Superporn" and a Sri Lankan businessman
could hold vital clues in an unsolved double murder, police say.

The two people have been linked to the brutal shooting of a couple in their fortified
weekend retreat northwest of Melbourne in Wildwood over seven years ago.

Istvan (Steve) Gulyas, 49, and his de facto partner, Duang Chith (Tina) Nhonthachith,
47, were shot in the head multiple times with two different guns in the lounge room of
their estate on Wildwood Road hours after hosting a barbecue.

Victoria Police announced a $200,000 reward on Friday for anyone who can help solve
their slayings on the evening of Sunday, October 19, 2003 and offered possible protection
to those who come forward with information from facing court themselves.

"We believe the offer of $200,000 and the possibility of an indemnity from prosecution
should be a catalyst to get anyone who has information to come forward," Detective Inspector
Bernie Edwards of the homicide unit told reporters on Friday.

The slain couple did not have a criminal history but were known as the owners of an
introduction company, Partner Search Australia, that had been investigated as an illegal
brothel and for having links to the sex industry.

Their murders had been linked to Melbourne's underworld war but it is no longer considered
a possible gangland hit.

Police say the couple probably knew their killer or killers.

Mr Gulyas also ran a truck repair shop and a leisure centre and knew Sri Lankan-born
businessman Nihal York through these companies.

"He is a person of interest," Det Insp Edwards said. "He's given a statement before.

We're very keen to speak to him again."

The Thai woman nicknamed "Superporn" was the last person to speak to Ms Nhonthachith
over the phone before she was shot dead.

"She's somebody we need to speak to clarify a few matters," Det Insp Edwards said.

"We're very interested in what the particular lady discussed with Tina over the phone
prior to Tina's death."

Superporn could now be living in Sydney and working in match-making services or massage
parlours while Mr York, who had attended the couple's barbecue the day of their deaths,
could now be overseas.

The $200,000 reward will be paid out if information leads to the arrest and subsequent
conviction of those responsible.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Oly08 (BEIJING)

China is putting the final touches on what promises to be a spectacular Olympic opening
ceremony tonight .. under gloomy skies and tight security.

The three-hour extravaganza at Beijing's iconic Bird's Nest stadium will feature more
than 15 thousand performers showcasing China's ancient history and its rise as a modern
power.

The ceremony begins at 8:08 pm (2208 AEST) .. on the eighth day of the eight month
of 2008 .. the number eight being deemed lucky by the Chinese because it represents prosperity.

Unfortunately bad luck looms .. with the thousands of athletes who'll march through
the national stadium waking today to a haze across Beijing and a forecast of rain.

Meantime more than 100 thousand security personnel are patrolling Beijing .. anti-missile
barriers have been set up near the Olympic venue .. and the military and police are on
guard around the country for any signs of trouble.

Ecstasy Wrap (SYDNEY)

The federal Attorney General says the massive seizure of more than four tonnes of ecstasy
sends a warning to international drug syndicates that Australia is not a soft target.

16 people across the country have been arrested today following the world's single
largest seizure of ecstasy.

Federal Police discovered pills with an estimated street value of 440 million dollars
in a shipping container from Italy following a 12 month investigation.

ROBERT McCLELLAND has praised the AFP for the record drug bust and says any belief
Australia is a soft target for drug smuggling has been well and truly smashed.

And AFP Commissioner MICK KEELTY says the seizure has caused a major disruption to
organised crime in Australia and overseas.

Mr KEELTY says the operation involving 400 officers .. 10 thousand hours of surveillance
and 185 thousand telephone intercepts .. was the largest the AFP's ever undertaken.

Ferguson Decision (Brisbane)

Queensland Attorney-General KERRY SHINE has applauded today's court decision .. which
gives convicted paedophile DENNIS FERGUSON until next Tuesday to surrender to police and
face trial on child sex charges.

The Queensland Court of Appeal has set aside a decision by a Brisbane judge to throw
out a case against FERGUSON .. who will now go to trial for allegedly sexually assaulting
a five-year-old girl at her home at Dalby west of Brisbane .. in November 2005.

Mr SHINE says police know where FERGUSON is staying and once he's in custody he'll
be held in a watchhouse until his appearance in court.

PollNT (DARWIN)

Northern Territory political leaders are talking up their credentials and policies
in a final bid to woo voters ahead of tomorrow's election.

As the world's attention turns to the Olympics .. Labor's chasing its third term in government.

Speculation the party will lose between four and five of its 19 seats is being rubbished
by former chief minister CLARE MARTIN .. who resigned in November citing the bruising
impact of the federal intervention into Aboriginal communities.

Current Chief Minister PAUL HENDERSON says the small size of the territory's electorates
and the impact of the recent redistribution of electoral boundaries means a handful of
votes will determine the outcome.

PollWA Carpenter (PERTH)

The West Australian government has stolen another march on the opposition by announcing
its first round of election sweeteners .. even before the Liberal party unveils its shadow
cabinet.

Premier ALAN CARPENTER has announced free public transport for seniors and the disabled
.. less than 24 hours after the Liberal party recalled COLIN BARNETT to the leadership.

The free travel would apply between 10am and 3pm on weekdays and all weekend .. at
a cost of 50 million dollars over four years.

Mr CARPENTER has also promised a doubling of the seniors' spectacles allowance from
50 to 100 dollars and says his government will lobby the federal government for an increase
in the aged pension.

Yacht Finding (TOWNSVILLE)

The Queensland coroner has found a freak accident caused the deaths of three men on
a yacht last year.

56 year-old DES BATTEN and brothers PETER and JOHN TUNSTEAD aged 69 and 63 .. had embarked
on a six-to-eight week journey around the north of Australia to Perth when they vanished
from their 9.8 metre catamaran .. the Kaz II .. on April 15 last year.

Despite a massive search operation .. no trace of the men was ever found.

Coroner MICHAEL BARNES has today found the deaths were caused by a freak accident.

He says one of the TUNSTEAD brothers had attempted to free a fishing line from the
yacht's propeller and fell in the ocean.

Three of Australia's big four banks now expect a cut in official interest rates in
September followed by more rate relief by Christmas.

Interest rates were left on hold at a 12-year high 7.25 per cent this month for the
fifth successive month .. but Reserve Bank governor GLENN STEVENS said demand was likely
to be subdued as economic growth slowed.

ANZ .. National Australia Bank and Westpac have all now forecast a rate cut in September
followed by another easing in the December quarter and more relief in 2009.

AFL Demons (MELBOURNE)

The return of Geelong star GARY ABLETT is set to provide a serious headache for Melbourne
in tonight's AFL clash at the MCG.

ABLETT has been absent for the past three games with an ankle injury but the Brownlow

AFL Threats (ADELAIDE)

Adelaide and North Melbourne have confirmed receiving letters threatening stars ANDREW
MCLEOD and NATHAN THOMPSON earlier this year.

MCLEOD .. THOMPSON and Sydney Swans ace ADAM GOODES are among the five AFL players
believed to have been targeted by the threats .. which were sent out in the lead-up to
the Victoria-Dream Team Hall of Fame tribute match in May.

LEAGUE PREVIEW (SYDNEY)

NRL heavyweights Manly and Melbourne go toe to toe in one of the most highly-anticipated
games of the NRL season at Brookvale Oval tonight.

A win for Manly would maintain their buffer at the top of the table .. while the Storm
can go level on points if they win.

In Wollongong .. St George Illawarra and Wests Tigers clash in a match crucial to both
sides' hopes of staying in touch with a finals spot.

League Williams (SYDNEY)

Today's court win for The Bulldogs and the NRL against SONNY BILL WILLIAMS means he'll
be in contempt of court if he proceeds to play in a friendly match for Toulon .. which
kicks off early Saturday morning Sydney time.

The injunction was granted in Sydney today despite the fact WILLIAMS wasn't represented

Former Solomon Islands Attorney-General JULIAN MOTI .. who's facing child sex charges

He was released from a Brisbane prison early last month and ordered by a court to report

MOTI .. who appeared in court today .. will now have to report to police three times a week.

MOTI won't have to appear for the next court mention on March 14.

MOTI .. a Fiji-born Australian citizen .. was arrested in December at Brisbane International

About 1,000 delegates from clubs met in Sydney today and voted unanimously to reject
an offer by the government to exempt small clubs from the poker tax.

NSW Premier Morris Iemma had offered to introduce a $1 million annual poker machine

The offer also would have seen the tax on clubs which earn more than $20 million a

Vic: Stand up, Australia, for first vertical cemetery

AAP General News (Australia)

Vic: Stand up, Australia, for first vertical cemetery

By Jamie Duncan

MELBOURNE, April 28 AAP - Plans for a new cemetery where bodies are buried standing
up have been given the green light by Victoria's planning minister.

After more than 15 years of work, Victorian company Palacom has won the right to establish
what is believed to be Australia's first vertical cemetery, in which bodies will be buried
on their feet.

The cemetery will be established on land at Derrinallum, in Victoria's Western District,
about 180km west of Melbourne.

Victorian Planning Minister Rob Hulls approved a proposal from the Corangamite Shire
to rezone the land from rural to public use, allowing the cemetery to be established.

Palacom director Tony Dupleix said the cemetery offered a cheaper, environmentally
friendlier burial.

Bodies would be held at a morgue in Melbourne and would be transported to the site
for burial in batches of 12 to 15, to minimise costs.

The bodies would be encased in bodybags and buried in individual pre-drilled three
metre deep holes, Mr Dupleix said.

The land would be returned to pasture and would be grazed by animals once it was stable, he said.

Burials would cost about $1,000 and would begin once access and fencing was completed
by the Darlington Cemetery Trust, which will manage the site.

"When you die, you are returned to the earth with a minimum of fuss and with no paraphernalia
that would affect the environment," he said.

"You're not burning 90kg of gas in a crematorium and there's no ongoing maintenance costs."

Darlington Cemetery Trust secretary Anna Jamieson said vertical burials would not replace
traditional burials at its existing cemetery, but would provide an attractive new option
for some.

"If you are interested in the environment, it's beautiful land on the Western District
plains facing Mount Elephant," she said.

"Some people will think it's great but other people might prefer a traditional burial."

MICROSOFT'S NEW WINDOWS OPENS AMID A SLOWING ECONOMY, CONSUMER-TARGETED XP SHOWS ITS BELLS AND WHISTLES.(Business)

Microsoft began trying to build a buzz around Windows XP yesterday, debuting the consumer-oriented operating system that Chairman Bill Gates called "the most important release since Windows 95."

Strong sales of the new software are critical, because the company gets 95 percent of its operating profit from sales of Windows and the Office suite of applications, said Henry Blodget, an analyst at Merrill Lynch.

But growth in the PC market is slowing, the economy is tough, power prices are rising, and some functionality has shifted to the Internet from PC-based applications requiring a powerful operating system. In addition, some analysts and investors said they're not sure the product offers enough new features to persuade consumers and businesses to buy new PCs.

"The jury is still out whether this product can drive PC demand," said Christian Koch, an analyst at Trusco Capital Management, which owns about 4.5 million shares of Microsoft. "You talk to the average PC user, they say, `No, we don't need all these bells and whistles.'"

Still, Microsoft is confident that Windows XP will sell strongly.

"We're hearing from the industry that this is going to be a great catalyst for tablet PCs, plug-in audio and video devices and applications," said Windows program manager Tom Laemmel. "Windows XP is as big a jump as from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95."

Wearing his trademark V-neck sweater, Gates and Group Vice President Jim Allchin demonstrated the clean, easy-to-navigate design of the new software, which is strongly oriented toward music, digital photography and videos. The presentation took place at the Experience Music Project, the Seattle rock 'n' roll museum built by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

The executives extolled the operating system's increased speed. They said it will let multiple users, such as family members, switch quickly among their individual sessions without restarting applications.

The software lets an authorized person on one computer securely access another computer over the Internet to fix problems, which Microsoft said will improve user support. It's also the first consumer-oriented operating system based on the business-oriented Windows 2000, which means it will probably be more reliable than Windows 95, 98 and Me.

A multimillion-dollar marketing campaign will jump-start the product. "We'll spend whatever it takes" to introduce the product properly, said Greg Sullivan, a Windows lead product manager.

Gates said XP cost more than $1 billion to develop, more than the cost of the Windows 2000 software it is based on. XP stands for the "experience" that the operating system's features will bring to the PC.

Pricing hasn't been set but will be "in line" with that of current software, Microsoft's Laemmel said. That means an upgrade could retail for between $109 to $149 and full package could cost between $209 and $309. No chip or memory upgrades are required for machines less than a few years old.

When Windows XP ships, it will come in two models. Windows XP Home Edition will be the successor to Windows Me. Windows XP Professional, an expansion of the Home Edition, will be the successor to Windows 2000, with additional management, software installation and maintenance features.

Home Edition will ship in a 32-bit implementation only, while Professional will also ship in a 64-bit implementation, meaning it can run the few new applications that harness that additional processing power.

Windows XP was known as Whistler while it was under development. Another piece of software is still being called Whistler: the back-office, server-based implementations of Windows XP that will succeed Windows 2000 Server, Advanced Server and Data Center. No new name has been selected for those products, and their release dates haven't been set, Laemmel said.

Microsoft shares closed yesterday virtually unchanged, down 56 cents at $58.19.

A few tips for A-Team when theyAAEre in Dubai.

Provided by 7DAYS.ae

I was very excited to read in 7DAYS about the potential plans to re-unite the A-Team on Dubai soil! It'd be great to see Mr T knocking heads together after being cut up on Sheikh Zayed Road, and also using his notoriously zig-zagging steering wheel style on the same tricky bit of road. I'm sure Faceman would feel right at home in Zinc, but it's a shame Hannibal isn't still around there are a lots of quality specialist smoking shops about. But it got me thinking about other TV shows I used to love being reincarnated out here in the Middle East. So, who do I need to talk to to get Manimal, Automan and The Scarecrow and Mrs King back up and running?
