Vic: Superporn search as $200,000 offered in double murder
By Steve Lillebuen
MELBOURNE, April 9 AAP - A Thai woman known as "Superporn" and a Sri Lankan businessman
could hold vital clues in an unsolved double murder, police say.
The two people have been linked to the brutal shooting of a couple in their fortified
weekend retreat northwest of Melbourne in Wildwood over seven years ago.
Istvan (Steve) Gulyas, 49, and his de facto partner, Duang Chith (Tina) Nhonthachith,
47, were shot in the head multiple times with two different guns in the lounge room of
their estate on Wildwood Road hours after hosting a barbecue.
Victoria Police announced a $200,000 reward on Friday for anyone who can help solve
their slayings on the evening of Sunday, October 19, 2003 and offered possible protection
to those who come forward with information from facing court themselves.
"We believe the offer of $200,000 and the possibility of an indemnity from prosecution
should be a catalyst to get anyone who has information to come forward," Detective Inspector
Bernie Edwards of the homicide unit told reporters on Friday.
The slain couple did not have a criminal history but were known as the owners of an
introduction company, Partner Search Australia, that had been investigated as an illegal
brothel and for having links to the sex industry.
Their murders had been linked to Melbourne's underworld war but it is no longer considered
a possible gangland hit.
Police say the couple probably knew their killer or killers.
Mr Gulyas also ran a truck repair shop and a leisure centre and knew Sri Lankan-born
businessman Nihal York through these companies.
"He is a person of interest," Det Insp Edwards said. "He's given a statement before.
We're very keen to speak to him again."
The Thai woman nicknamed "Superporn" was the last person to speak to Ms Nhonthachith
over the phone before she was shot dead.
"She's somebody we need to speak to clarify a few matters," Det Insp Edwards said.
"We're very interested in what the particular lady discussed with Tina over the phone
prior to Tina's death."
Superporn could now be living in Sydney and working in match-making services or massage
parlours while Mr York, who had attended the couple's barbecue the day of their deaths,
could now be overseas.
The $200,000 reward will be paid out if information leads to the arrest and subsequent
conviction of those responsible.
Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
