NSW: Carr and Moroney at odds over driver re-testing

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR and Police Commissioner KEN MORONEY are at odds over
how to tackle the state's road toll.

Mr MORONEY says the state should consider making drivers re-sit licence exams every
five to ten years to help reduce road fatalities.

But Mr CARR says re-testing won't improve road safety.

He says about three quarters of all drivers have no demerit points on their licence
and re-testing wouldn't be practical.

However the premier is considering imposing curfews on young drivers, and a discussion
paper on the issue will be released later this year.

The state's Youth Action and Policy Association says a curfew could place young people
in grave danger, particularly those in outer-metropolitan areas with less access to public
transport.

Executive officer KRISTY DELANEY says people who work or study in the evening will
resort to hitchhiking.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau says the highest road accident fatality rate
is in the 26 to 59-year-old age bracket.
