NSW: Xmas brings most enduring spirit: Sydney religious leaders

Sydney's religious leaders say this year's Olympic Games have ignited the Australian
spirit, but Christmas brings with it the most enduring spirit of all.

The retiring Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, The Most Rev HARRY GOODHEW, says in his
Christmas message that the Olympics have brought that special something to Sydney.

But he says sadly, unlike Christmas the spirit didn't last.

He says that after the Olympics, Sydney-siders came back down to earth with a thud.

The Catholic Archbishop of Sydney Cardinal EDWARD CLANCY in his Christmas message agrees
the Olympics have brought about a remarkable spirit of generosity, friendship and goodwill.

But, he says it was the celebration of the 2000th anniversary of Jesus Christ that
most marked the year for Christians.

Meanwhile, The Salvation Army has reminded Australians that Christmas is not a time
of joy for everybody.
